CHAPTER TWENTY-TWO: AVERY

Hearing Detective Sterling tell us that Dr. Roberts is now on the run has me calling Juliet. Roberts may not be my typical skip, but he’s acting like one, and she’s the best at hunting down those on the run.

“I take it you’re back in Vegas? Or are you still in New Orleans?” Juliet asks when I call her.

“I’m back in Vegas. We got back late last night.” I then tell her about our rescue of the other six kids and about bringing Joey back to life for his mom.

“I can’t imagine the emotional roller coaster that poor woman is on. She’s going to have nightmares about losing her son and about what could have happened to him. She’s probably feeling guilty as well. Every one of those assholes needs to rot in hell.”

“I agree, which is why I’m calling. We’re looking for the doctor who signed off on the death certificates. When the cops went to pick him up, they found him gone. I was hoping you could do a trace?”

“Happy to do it,” Juliet says, her fingers flying across the keyboard as she sets up her search criteria. “I’ll reach out to my contact at the precinct. I don’t think it will be a problem getting the information I need.”

“If you run into a wall, let me know. Sterling is the detective on the case, and I’m certain he’ll be fine with our help.”

“I doubt I’ll have a problem, but I’ll keep that in mind. Is that all you need?”

“I wanted to see if you—” I hear a knock at her door and stop talking.

“Someone’s here. I think it’s my neighbor. I watched her daughter today. Can you hold for a minute?”

I assure her I can as I listen to her greet her neighbor. Juliet works from home and suffers from a mild case of agoraphobia. She hates to leave her apartment for any reason. She even has her groceries delivered, which makes her the go-to babysitter for her entire building. She is always watching one or more children and I often tease her about earning income from her daycare side business.

I hear her talking and take a moment to think about what I want her to do for Angel. I hear a child giggle over the phone and smile, remembering Angel laughing with Elina and the boys during breakfast. The resilience of children is amazing. Less than forty-eight hours ago, Angel was fighting for her life. She deserves to have a better future and I know I can make that happen. Somehow.

“It was my neighbor Sylvie and her daughter Josie. She’s the cutest little thing. Her mom hates leaving her, but had to go into work for a meeting today. Sorry, it took so long. She’s taking Josie to a sleepover tonight and needed the meds she leaves with me.”

“Is she sick?” I ask.

“She is. Poor little thing. She has chronic fatigue syndrome,” Juliet explains, capturing my full attention.

“Chronic fatigue syndrome?” I ask.

“Have you heard of it? I hadn’t until Sylvie told me what the doctor said.
